Mural Creation Process

It takes months of work by all of the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society’s (PGHMS) committees to create a mural. Below are listed the various steps that need to be accomplished.

Site Selection: An appropriate site must to be located for the new mural. Once the site is selected, it is checked to see if it requires any repairs, a sealer or a base coat. An agreement is signed with the property owner to allow the painting of the mural on the property.

Sponsorship: A sponsor needs be found to assist with funding the cost of the mural. These costs include artist commission, site preparation, paint, scaffolding, anti-graffiti coating and ongoing maintenance and repairs. If there is a single sponsor for the mural, an agreement is signed with the sponsor showing the theme, location, timing and funding for the mural.

Theme: A theme is then select for the mural and research is conducted so that the mural can be historically correct in its presentation of the theme.

Artist Selection: Once a site and sponsor has been secured and a theme chosen, the PGHMS Board extends an invitation to mural artists. The prospective artists are furnished with the theme research information as well as the site location and its parameters. Interested artists are requested to submit sketches and interpretations of their proposed mural. The selected artist produces a scale rendering of the proposed mural, and enters into an artist agreement with PGHMS.

City Approval: The artist rendering is presented to both the Punta Gorda City Beautification and Revitalization Committees for their review. The committees recommendations, along with the rendering is submitted to the Punta Gorda City Council and CRA for final governmental approval.

Dedication: When the artist has completed the mural and it has been accepted by the PGHMS Board, a ribbon cutting is scheduled and invitations and publicity are distributed.

Follow-up: Approximately one month after the completion of the mural, a clear preservative and anti graffiti coating is applied and a commemorative plaque is attached. Ongoing maintenance is performed as required.
